Terrified of Needles: Need Help!

Hey everyone, I have a confession to make - I’m scared shitless of needles. Just the thought of them makes me break out in a cold sweat. I know it’s a common fear, but for me, it’s more than just a little anxiety. It’s a full-blown phobia that has made simple medical procedures feel like climbing Mount Everest.
I’ve tried all the usual tricks to calm myself down - deep breathing, looking away, even humming my favorite song - but nothing seems to work. I know I can’t avoid needles forever, especially when it comes to necessary medical care.
If anyone else has overcome this fear or has some tips to share, I would

My personal experience involves dealing with various phobias, and after years of therapy, I have learned some techniques that may be beneficial:

  • Begin with imaginary exposures for when your fear is strong and you are not ready for in-person practice. Sit in a safe place and visualize your fear in detail, reminding yourself that you are safe. Keep calm with slow breathing and relaxed muscles, taking breaks if needed.

  • Move on to simulated exposures by introducing outside stimuli to make it more real. Watch videos or practice with objects to simulate the experience. Practice breathing and take breaks as needed to build comfort.

  • Eventually, progress to real exposures by facing the actual fear, starting with less intense situations. If you need to retreat and try again later, it’s okay – just keep at it.

  • A helpful tip from a doctor is to eat a piece of candy when faced with something scary or painful. The sugar provides a sensory distraction and a reward for your brain, making the experience more bearable. This technique is used even with NICU babies during procedures.

I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but I look away when I’m being poked with a needle. I try to distract myself with other thoughts in that moment.

I used to have an intense fear of needles and thought I would need to find an alternative to giving myself injections, but I realized that wasn’t an option. So, I gathered my courage and told myself, “I can do this.” I watched a YouTube video on daily glucose injections and realized that people who do this regularly have tips and tricks. I found it easier to inject myself rather than rely on someone else. My biggest tip is to prep your skin with an alcohol wipe and find the spot where you feel the needle the least. Take a deep breath and slowly inject. It gets easier with practice, so don’t give up. Look for more tips on YouTube and remember, you can do this!
