Struggling with fertility: Exploring double insurance coverage

Hey everyone, I’m currently navigating the world of fertility treatments, and it’s been quite a journey. I’ve been researching the option of having two insurance policies to help with the costs associated with these treatments. I was wondering if anyone has experience with having double insurance coverage for fertility treatments and if there are any tips or insights you could share. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I figure out the best way to approach this. Thank you in advance!

I tried coordinating Progyny with a Cigna plan last year for a freeze all. We never actually submitted the secondary claim because the leftover amount was so small it felt like more hassle than it was worth. What the billing office told me was that they could forward the Progyny EOB to Cigna, but Cigna might still demand their own prior auth, even if Progyny already greenlit everything. It matters a lot whether Win Fertility is just a network or a standalone benefit with its own rules. Calling Cigna and asking to speak directly with their fertility benefits team is the only way to know for sure if a prior auth is needed and if the self pay chunk is even reimbursable. A few people in my local IVF group got it to work, but every single one said the clinic had to resubmit corrected codes multiple times before Cigna paid. I would still give it a go if I were you, just set aside some time for the phone calls.

Hi I had two insurances, my primary didnt cover IVF but my secondary did. If your secondary insurance covers IVF but your primary doesn’t, you must call both insurance providers to set up Coordination of Benefits and inform your clinic who is your primary/secondary insurance provider. Your clinic will then bill the primary insurance first for every procedure and once the primary insurance denies the coverage, the clinic will submit that denial to your secondary insurance, which will then cover the remaining balance. In my case my primary was Anthem and secondary was Kaiser and all my IVF procedures were done at Kaiser.

I had primary and secondary (both Cigna). I only had pre auth on my primary- the clinic never told me I was short on benefits for the cycle until the day before the egg retrieval. They made me pay in cash for the entirety of the procedure before I went under or else they would cancel it lol. After that they billed my primary and after that my secondary reimbursed me months later (only after charging me 12,000 for 6,000 PGTSR labs- which is all to say the finance team at GNF is ass and I wouldn’t take my experience to heart lol)
