Struggling to Self-Inject PIO, Any Tips?

Hey there, fellow IVF warriors! I need some guidance on this - how do you manage to self-inject progesterone in oil (PIO)? I’ve been finding it quite challenging and nerve-wracking. Any advice or personal experiences you can share to make this process a bit easier? I’m all ears and in need of some helpful tips!

I am in awe of the capabilities of the auto injector.

I relied on a mirror to assist in reaching behind me because my vision isn’t sufficient for me to accurately inject without it. If you can access the area on your buttocks with your hand, I believe you can successfully administer the injection.

I administer my own injections and wear a size 16/18. After prepping the needle, I stand in front of a mirror and shift my weight to one leg while twisting and popping my booty. I press the needle gently against my skin until it breaks through, then inject the medication. After removing the needle, I apply firm pressure with a tissue and a bandaid to prevent bleeding. I finish off with a few squats to prevent oil from creating a lump. And that’s it!

I found that doing my own PIO shots after my 4th transfer at a 16/18 gauge hurt less over time because I wasn’t clenching in anticipation. Check out my TikTok video from a couple years ago where I demonstrate how I did them: https://www.tiktok.com/@radkitten82/video/7149595775318691115?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7481649692192278046

I used to be a size 14 and administered my own injections. The easiest method for giving glute shots was sitting on a stool and reaching back to inject the outer top edge of the cheek. I eventually did them standing up, except for the trigger I needed for my deltoid. It’s nearly impossible to do your own arm, but good luck - you can do it!

It would be beneficial to inquire with your clinic about the possibility of utilizing the ventrogluteal site for injections. My work schedule is changing, so I am considering starting my own injections and plan to discuss this option with my clinic soon. The ventrogluteal site is located further around to the front, closer to where your forearms rest when your arms are at your sides. Although it may be challenging to locate the exact spot, it appears to be easier to access. I will ask my clinic if I can attempt this method and request them to mark the spot on my body with a sharpie.

I am experiencing the same difficulties with the PIO shots as you are. I am struggling to muster up the courage to do it myself and my physical limitations make it even more challenging. My nurse suggested using a mirror for assistance, but I am skeptical. My clinic advised against using an auto injector, which I never ordered. It seems like it would take away the hardest part of the process, but I have concerns about it not inserting the needle properly. I don’t have any solutions, but I am here to offer solidarity and wish you good luck!

I am able to easily give myself shots with the auto-injector because I am a confident individual.

Please consider discussing with your team about the possibility of utilizing the ventrogluteal site for a less painful and easier to landmark injection. Tutorial video available

My RE went to great lengths to secure an auto injector for me, even making multiple calls to my insurance provider to advocate for its necessity. Although I haven’t needed to use it, the injector is now among my stack of medications and highly recommended by others!

Consider getting the auto-injector if you have concerns. I was scared to inject myself, but with this tool, injections are painless and a breeze!

Rephrased: My biggest challenge is feeling confident about the injection site. I just administered my first one tonight. The nurse marked circles about 5 inches to the left or right of the top of my buttocks. Online sources recommend a slightly higher location, but I’ll follow her guidance for now. What recommendations did you receive for the injection site?
