Need Guidance on Hysteroscopy and Polypectomy Experience

Tomorrow, I have my first hysteroscopy with a polypectomy scheduled, and I’m feeling quite nervous about it. I would appreciate hearing about your experiences with this procedure. How was the process like for you? Any tips or advice to share as I prepare for mine? Thank you in advance for your insights!

I underwent a polypectomy two years ago to remove numerous uterine polyps. My GYN couldn’t even count how many there were! The procedure lasted over an hour as he meticulously removed all of them. I can’t imagine going through that without anesthesia, but maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if you only had a couple.

Recovery was a breeze for me - just a few days of bleeding. I even went for a 6 mile walk the day after because I felt great. Good luck to you!

Hello! I recently had a hysteroscopy in the office without anesthesia. It was a quick procedure for taking photos, a little uncomfortable but not too bad. I managed by reciting the alphabet in my head. I’m expecting the polypectomy to be more painful since they cauterize the polyps. I was under anesthesia for that procedure and it only took about 15 minutes. I woke up in the recovery room afterwards.

I personally can’t speak to the experience of being awake during the procedure since I was put under for mine. However, when I woke up from my Hysteroscopy/Polypectomy, I was in a significant amount of pain. I generally have a high pain tolerance and have been fortunate that other fertility procedures have not been painful for me, such as egg retrievals. Given my experiences, I would lean towards not wanting to be awake for a Polypectomy.

I also want to mention that fertility specialists have never accurately described the level of pain I may experience during procedures. They always seem to downplay it, which can be frustrating. Cutting and cauterizing polyps doesn’t sound like just discomfort, but actual pain. I’m not trying to scare you, but I think it’s important for doctors to be more honest about what to expect.

I didn’t have a polypectomy, but I did have a septum removed during my hysteroscopy. My doctor insisted on using anesthesia because of how invasive the procedure can be. The cost of $11,000 seems extremely high. My insurance didn’t cover any of it, but it only cost me around $4,000 total with anesthesia. I had the procedure done at my RE’s surgery center rather than in a hospital, so that might have made a difference.

I was surprised by the suggestion of performing a polyp removal procedure while awake. I wouldn’t advise it. I had two procedures and both were done under anesthesia. Even for a small polyp. However, I am not in the US and it’s covered by our Medicare program here. The recovery was smooth for the first one, but the second one is taking a bit longer.

I got my procedure done at the IVF doctor’s office. I was put under anesthesia, so I needed someone to drive me. I took a nap in the afternoon to sleep off the anesthesia. I didn’t experience any discomfort afterward, maybe just some spotting. Did you make sure to ask for the cash pay price at the hospital using that exact wording? They might charge more if you don’t specify. It’s worth talking to the billing department directly for a better price.

Hey there! Just sharing my experience with an outpatient hysteroscopy. In the UK, they didn’t offer IV sedation before the procedure. The local anaesthetic was fine, but I couldn’t handle the normal saline to fill up the uterine cavity. It was extremely painful for me, but maybe it was due to my lack of previous pregnancies. So if you’re getting just basic pain relief, I’d opt for IV sedation. Good luck to you!

I underwent an in-office hysteroscopy and had two small polyps removed. Reading others’ experiences here made me very anxious as most underwent general anesthesia. I took 2 ibuprofen and 1 lorazepam an hour before the procedure, and had local anesthesia in the cervix.

Overall, the procedure went well but I won’t sugarcoat it - there were moments of intense pain. Thankfully, it didn’t last long, although it felt like an eternity at the time.

I was fortunate to have a fantastic team of a doctor and 2 nurses who were incredibly caring and supportive throughout. Their presence made a huge difference for me.

I had my polyps removed in Australia this morning under general anesthesia. I felt tired all day but haven’t had any pain yet, just a bit of bleeding. The total cost was around $3700 because I opted for a private surgeon, my insurance didn’t cover it. The procedure was quick, I was in and out in under 3 hours. Just wanted to mention I had multiple small polyps all over.
