I have my HSG test scheduled for next week, and I must admit that I’m feeling quite nervous about it. I’ve read some experiences online, and while some people say it’s a straightforward procedure, others mention discomfort and pain. I would really appreciate hearing about your personal experiences or any tips you might have to ease my anxiety. Thank you all in advance!
If you have allergies to eggs or shellfish like clams, it’s important to check beforehand. Otherwise, there shouldn’t be any issues. If you’re anxious, don’t hesitate to ask for options before the test! I personally took a Valium and 800 mg of ibuprofen and didn’t find it painful at all. Best of luck! ![]()
While everyone’s experience may vary, I personally found the HSG procedure to be fairly comfortable. The table was cold and the feeling was similar to a pap smear.
Make sure to check if your salt contains iodine, as most table salt does.
Regarding the HSG, my GP gave me toradol which helped a lot. Be sure to take ibuprofen before the procedure to make it easier. Good luck!
I am fortunate to not have experienced any pain during the procedure. Taking 800mg of ibuprofen in advance may have contributed to my comfort level. If you are worried about an iodine allergy, consider performing a patch test by purchasing some tonight to see if you have a reaction.
They didn’t use dye for my procedure due to my shellfish allergy, even though they are not related. The saline contrast they used instead is much more tolerable than CT contrast. They assured me that they would be able to see enough without the dye. Don’t worry, you’ll be alright! The catheter insertion took 30 minutes and was painful, but it only lasted around 30-45 seconds. I took Tylenol and ibuprofen beforehand which helped a bit.
It wasn’t painful at all, lasting less than 10 minutes. The examiner talked me through it and I only felt a little pressure. I took Tylenol before, and luckily no blockages were found. This small win is encouraging on my journey to conceive.
In my experience, the level of discomfort during medical procedures can vary depending on the doctor. For me, my HSG procedure started off okay, then became uncomfortable, and eventually reached extreme pain for about 10 seconds. I ended up passing out afterwards, although they reassured me that it is a common occurrence. I believe not eating enough beforehand may have contributed to this. Despite hearing horror stories, my experience was quick and easy. Prior to my first FET, I avoided using Reddit due to the prevalence of scary stories that made me anxious. During my SHG, some find it painful, but for me, it was just uncomfortable due to the different doctor. Similarly, during my IUI, I experienced pain with one nurse but none with the other.
Just had my HSG done today. I believe your experience may vary depending on the person performing it. The only discomfort I felt was during the insertion of the speculum. I didn’t feel anything while they were putting in the dye. I experienced cramping after the procedure, but didn’t need any additional pain medication.
