Deciding Between Awake or Anaesthetic for Biopsy and Hysteroscopy

Have you had a HSG procedure or a saline sono done before? In my experience, the pain was comparable to that of a saline sono: a sharp jab that is over quickly.

I underwent this procedure a couple of months back and requested sedation. The medical team provided me with twilight sedation and multiple pain relievers. While there was still some discomfort, it was manageable. In the past, I had the procedure done without any sedation or pain medication, and that was the most painful experience I’ve had.

I went under for my hysteroscopy after having a painful biopsy done without anesthesia.

My pain tolerance is low, so I took Valium and Cytotec, as well as OTC painkillers before the procedure. Besides the initial discomfort of the speculum insertion, I didn’t feel anything. The procedure was so fast that I was surprised by how quickly it was over.

Although I didn’t have time to take ibuprofen beforehand, I found the hysteroscopy and biopsy to be excruciating. The HSGs and SIS were much easier with the ibuprofen. The biopsy was the worst 10 seconds of my life, worse than when they had to remove the IUD without strings. Next time, I will make sure to have some medication.

I am grateful that my RE is administering twilight anesthesia for my procedure, making it possible to perform both the biopsy and exploratory surgeries in one session.

I was administered oral oxytocin, IV fentanyl, and IV versed for my endometrial biopsy. Despite being awake during the procedure, my memories are now blurry. I remember the intense pain and feeling grateful for the sedation. The pain was so severe that I vocalized during the procedure. I strongly recommend some form of sedation, such as moderate sedation. My doctor only offered sedation after I requested it for the biopsy. She mentioned that hysteroscopies require full anesthesia due to their invasiveness and pain.

I underwent the biopsy with a Xanax, Valium, and lidocaine, and it wasn’t too bad, just a bit uncomfortable. Given the option, I would definitely choose to go under for a hysterscopy. Good doctors will ensure a smooth procedure without causing harm.
